The final film of the late Lee Sun Kyun, The Land of Happiness, directed by Choo Chang Min, will be released in August, according to distributor NEW. The company announced the release date today while unveiling the film’s launch poster.
The Land of Happiness tells the story of attorney Jung In Hoo (Jo Jung Suk), who fights to save Park Tae Joo (Lee Sun Kyun), a man facing a life-or-death trial following the 1979 presidential assassination. The film, directed by Choo Chang Min of the box-office hit Masquerade, became Lee Sun Kyun’s final work following his untimely passing in December last year.
The newly released poster contrasts Jung In Hoo, holding up documents and determined to defend his client, with Park Tae Joo, standing firm during his trial. The tagline, “1979 Presidential Assassination Trial – There’s someone we must save,” hints at The Land of Happiness uncovering a lesser-known story from the 10.26 assassination case that shook modern Korean history.
In The Land of Happiness, Jo Jung Suk portrays Jung In Hoo, a lawyer who believes there is only victory, not justice, in courtrooms. The late Lee Sun Kyun plays Park Tae Joo, a principled soldier caught up in a historical event. The film also features Yoo Jae Myung as Jeon Sang Doo, another pivotal character, further adding to the anticipation surrounding this highly awaited film.
