On the 13th, Kim Soo Hyun’s family history came into the limelight once more, as his father Kim Chung Hoon remarried in a private ceremony.
The 64-year-old singer tied the knot with his long-time partner, only identified as Mrs. Ahn, in a discrete event aimed at minimizing media attention to avoid overshadowing his son’s current role in the drama Queen of Tears. Kim Soo Hyun did not attend the wedding.
Meanwhile, Kim Soo Hyun’s family life came to light after his half-sister Kim Juna ventured into showbiz through Produce 101. Kim Juna was born after their father, the former lead vocalist of the 80s rock band Seven Dolphins, divorced Kim Soo Hyun’s mother and started a new family.
In a 2020 broadcast of Channel A’s Rumor Has It, journalist Hwang Young Jin remarked, “Kim Soo Hyun is in a financially comfortable position. He has been financially supporting his father, Kim Chung Hoon, and his new family.” Despite this financial support, the Queen of Tears star has always said that he was an only child out of respect for his mother and that he has no relationship with his half-sister. However, it’s known that Kim Soo Hyun maintains a strong bond with his father, Kim Chung Hoon.
Kim Chung Hoon himself shared in a 2019 interview how he regrets not being there for his son during a crucial time due to his band commitments. “There’s one thing that’s been weighing on me for years,” he opened up. “In 2004, I received a call that Soo Hyun needed surgery. I was told it wasn’t a major operation, so I didn’t think much of it. The band was in such a state that we would have had to shut down if I wasn’t there. I hesitated, and unfortunately, I didn’t go. But it turned out to be quite a significant operation.”
