Netflix has confirmed the production of its upcoming series Aema and unveiled its star-studded cast of Lee Ha Nee, Bang Hyo Rin, Jin Seon Kyu, and Cho Hyun Chul.
Aema follows the struggles of Hui Ran and Joo Ae in the process of creating the film Madame Aema, a sensational hit that swept Korea during the early 1980s. It tells a fictional comedy taking place in 80s Chungmuro, the hub of the Korean film industry, that uncovers the tough truths actors face behind the glamour of show business. The upcoming series is written and directed by director Lee Hae Young of Believer.
Lee Ha Nee plays Jeong Hui Ran, the best actress of her generation who finds herself dropped from the lead role in film Madame Aema due to her dispute with the production studio.
Bang Hyo Rin star as Shin Joo Ae, an aspiring actress who lands the role of the lead in Madame Aema. Joo Ae, a nightclub dancer with dreams of becoming an actress, finds herself unexpectedly chosen as the star of the nation’s most awaited film one day.
Jin Seon Kyu portrays Goo Jung Ho, a producer determined to survive in the cutthroat world of Chungmuro’s film industry. He adds complexity to the story by organizing a large-scale audition and replacing Hui Ran with a newcomer for the lead role in Madame Aema to rein in the uncontrollable Hui Ran.
Cho Hyun Chul returns as Kwak In Woo, a timid aspiring director about to make his directorial debut with Madame Aema. He adds vibrant energy to the story by portraying In Woo, who faces numerous choices and dilemmas.
