Doctor Cha director Kim Dae Jin recently revealed the behind-the-scenes reasoning for Roy Kim (Min Woo Hyuk) ending up with another woman instead of Cha Jung Suk (Uhm Jung Hwa).

In an interview with SPOTVNEWS on the 7th, Kim responded to a question about the audience’s disappointment at Roy Kim’s ending with a laugh, saying, “Did you feel disappointed? I was too.”

He confessed, “I informed the writer that I didn’t mind other parts, but I hoped they would revise this one. The writer’s perspective was that Roy isn’t young and that she has no plans to pair him with Cha Jung Suk. The ending for Cha Jung Suk was about her finding her own independence without men. She said, ‘It doesn’t make sense for Roy to keep crushing on Jung Suk if we’re not going to marry the two off?'”

“The writer hoped that everyone, including Roy, would have a happy ending,” he continued. “Having been abandoned by his parents, coming to Korea and feeling some affection for a woman named Jung Suk which filled up a certain lack of maternal love, and when his birth parents found him just to ask for his bone marrow, Jung Suk gave him a room to heal. She thought it’d be better to start a relationship with someone else, even if it wasn’t a big romance.”

Yet, Kim expressed his regret, stating, “I viewed Roy as a fantasy. He didn’t need to do anything with Jung Suk, but simply remaining a popular doctor and having a new intern wonder, ‘Who’s that guy?’ would have been great. It wouldn’t be bad if Roy didn’t let someone else into his heart.”

The director laughingly added, “I, too, hoped that Roy would end up alone. (Min Woo Hyuk and I) often said, ‘Then what? He’s dating another woman.'” He then recalled the time they shot the controversial scene and shared, “I just quickly yell ‘cut’ to make that scene as short as possible.”
