Kim Eun Sook, the screenwriter of the popular Netflix series The Glory, recently had a Q&A session in which she expressed gratitude for the overwhelming love for the show and reflected on the past few months.
Q: What are some of your favorite lines and scenes from the series?
There are so many great lines in the series that it’s hard to choose just a few. Instead, I’ll choose the scenes that really stood out to me.
1. The scene at the police station where the detective tells Dong Eun (played by Song Hye Kyo), “I had to [listen to you], even if it’s 18 years late,” was so powerful that I found myself tearing up, despite knowing what would happen next.
2. In the scene where young Dong Eun talks to the landlord lady, she says, “Let’s die in the spring, the spring.” It was so emotional that both Son Sook, the actress who played the lady, and Jung Ji So, the star who played young Dong Eun, cried at the same time.
3. The final scene of the last episode was really powerful. When Dong Eun and Yeo Jung (Lee Do Hyun) said, “I love you,” it had a different meaning. Dong Eun wanted to live for Yeo Jung, while Yeo Jung wanted to live for Dong Eun.
4. The scene where So Hee possessed the shaman was simply perfect. Dong Eun’s acting was truly amazing as she conveyed so much emotion without even mentioning So Hee’s presence or her divine punishment.
5. I also like the scene where Yeo Jung and Do Young (Jung Sung Ill) play Go. I loved how Yeo Jung talked about the “origin” of the victims, which is the central theme of The Glory. I had hoped to convey it through Yeo Jung’s dialogue, and Lee Do Hyun, who portrayed the character, did an exceptional job delivering it. Even the sound of his breathing was perfectly in sync with the character.
6. The scene where Yeon Jin and Officer Shin argue was so powerful. Yeon Jin’s acting was incredible, especially when she said, “Fine! Are you going to make up for it now?” I was left speechless by her performance.
Q. Can you tell us what the future holds for Dong Eun and Yeo Jung? Will they be able to find happiness together?
Yeo Jung and Dong Eun’s journey ultimately leads to revenge and destruction. They become perpetrators in the process of revenge, and that’s why they don’t know how to live other than heading towards another hell, which in their case is the prison. But they head there like they’re heading toward heaven because they know they will be there together. They are truly and madly in love.
