tvN’s My Roommate Is a Gumiho ended with a happy ending. Hyeri took on the role of Lee Dam, a college student who falls in love with a gumiho. And with the role, she showed off her candid, confident, and lovely charms. In an interview with iMBC, Hyeri honestly opened up about her final thoughts on the work and her boyfriend, Ryu Jun Yeol.

My Roommate Is a Gumiho is a drama adaptation of a popular webtoon of the same name. That must not have been an easy challenge. “This is my first webtoon-adapted drama and my first rom-com series. So I was worried and felt pressured. I heard that the webtoon artist created the Lee Dam character thinking about me. After hearing that, I thought to myself; I could do this. Lee Dam’s charm is that she’s honest and straightforward. So I tried to find out if I had something in common with the role to establish the character.”

Hyeri and Jang Ki Yong had already worked together in Seonam Girls High School Investigators seven years ago. “At the time, neither of us had the leisure to get to know each other. But I was glad to see him again. Jang Ki Yong has a very calm and caring personality. He helped me a lot.”

The two of them showed such great chemistry that whenever they had romantic moments on the show, viewers posted the screen grabs with the words “Ryu Jun Yeol, close your eyes!” Regarding this, she said, “I was grateful to see those memes. That could only happen when viewers are interested in the show. I filmed hoping people will say that we have great chemistry, and I think we’ve met their expectations. I want to thank Jang Ki Yong for that.”

Regarding many love scenes compared to other rom-com, Hyeri explained, “As for the bed scene, Jang Ki Yong and I got along pretty well by then, so there were no difficulties. The kiss scene from the writers’ previous project (What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim) became such a hot topic. So the viewers had a high expectation for our romance scenes. So I filmed that scene for about 10 hours straight, but most of it was edited out. I asked the director about that, and he said he had to do it because our show is PG15.”

To the question about how Ryu Jun Yeol reacted to her romance scenes with Jang Ki Yong, Hyeri answered by saying that they have a good relationship. “I love this drama, so I hope the article about this interview will be about the drama. But I am grateful to Ryu Jun Yeol for always understanding and supporting me.”

It has been 10 years since she started her acting career in 2012 with Tasty Life. What is My Roommate Is a Gumiho to Hyeri? “It’s a work that I had put all my passion into. I wanted to do a great performance, and I loved the welcoming set. It’s an affectionate work that I had fun filming with people that I love.”

Hyeri is currently filming When Flowers Bloom, I Think of the Moon (literal title). “I’m playing the role of Kang Ro Seo, and she’s a brave and smart person. She’s quite different from Lee Dam. I hope you look forward to a whole new side of Lee Hyeri.”
