Song Joong Ki’s Big Screen Comeback Seems Quite Rocky. ‘Space Sweepers’ in Talks to Be Released on Netflix

The upcoming movie Space Sweepers might be released on Netflix rather than in theaters due to the aftermath of COVID-19.

An official from Merry Christmas, the distributor of Space Sweepers, told news1, “Space Sweepers is considering various release methods, including Netflix release, but nothing has been confirmed.”

The main reason why Space Sweepers us agonizing over the release of Netflix is because of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the number of moviegoers dropped significantly since the outbreak of coronavirus, it became difficult for the movie, which cost about 24 billion KRW (about 21 million USD), to break the break-even point. The break-even point for Space Sweepers is estimated at around 6 million moviegoers.

Previously, it was reported that the movie is most likely to be released around the Christmas season, but now, even that seems unlikely.

Space Sweepers, set in the year 2092, is about the crew of space junk collector ship The Victory jumping into a dangerous deal after discovering a humanoid robot named Dorothy that’s known to be a weapon of mass destruction. Song Joong Ki, Kim Tae Ri, Yoo Hae Jin, and Jin Sun Kyu starred in the film.
