Kim Woo Bin, Song Seung Heon, Kang Yoo Seok, Esom, and Director Jo Eui Seok attended a press conference of the upcoming Netflix series Black Knight.
Black Knight is set in a future Korean peninsula where extreme air pollution makes it impossible to live without oxygen respirators. The story follows legendary delivery driver 5-8 and a refugee named Sawol as they stand up against the ruling group called Cheonmyeong. The series offers a dystopian world in which a small number of humans survive in the worst environment after a comet collision and rapid desertification, and the class divide is stronger than ever, making it an intriguing aspect of the show.
Director Jo Eui Seok explained his reason for planning the project, stating, “When I saw the original webtoon, I just loved its worldview. I liked the setting that delivery drivers carry oxygen and necessities in the near future.”
Kim Woo Bin said, “We were all wearing masks not too long ago. When I read the script, I thought that maybe something like this could really happen in the future. I was curious about those stories. As various characters appear in the work, I became interested in these characters as well.”
Song Seung Heon added, “Even now, we don’t feel particularly grateful for oxygen. But in our work, you can’t live without an oxygen mask. I started to think a lot about the environment, realizing that it would be a big problem if such a world came to be.”
In his portrayal of 5-8, Kim Woo Bin said, “When I approach any work, I find it most important to understand why the character thinks, acts, and speaks the way they do. This time, I particularly wanted to think about the pain of those who are abandoned simply because they were born as refugees. I tried to think about what a world where everyone is happy would be like while bearing the character’s pain in my heart.”
He also aimed to incorporate these emotions into the action scenes, expressing his hope that the rough, anger-filled moves would resonate with the viewers.
The show includes high-level action sequences. Kang Yoo Seok said, “The director told me he wanted me to become an ‘action monster.’ I thought it wouldn’t be easy. I prepared for about three months, but it wasn’t easy as I went through basic physical training and practiced sequences.” Esom also shared her experience, saying, “I practiced a lot in the beginning. At some point, they told me I could stop now. That’s how much I practiced.”
Song Seung Heon, who plays the role of Ryu Seok, the CEO of Cheonmyeong Group, hinted, “Ryu Seok is a character with his own beliefs and goals. If you keep that in mind, I think you won’t see him as just a bad person.”
Black Knight is set to be released on May 12th.
