Park Min Young recently shared a harrowing experience during the underwater filming of the drama Marry My Husband.
On March 24, the YouTube channel TEO released a new episode of its web variety show Salon Drip, featuring Park Min Young and Wi Ha Jun, who previously co-starred in Siren’s Kiss.
During the show, host Jang Do Yeon asked the two actors, “You both seem as perfect as your characters. Was it difficult to maintain that image?” In response, Wi Ha Jun opened up about his struggles during the underwater scenes in Netflix’s Squid Game. “I’m actually terrified of water, so I had to take swimming lessons. But it wasn’t even about learning to swim—it was just about overcoming the fear of putting my face underwater,” he admitted.
Park Min Young empathized, sharing a chilling experience from the set of Marry My Husband. “There are moments during underwater filming where you actually feel a genuine fear of death,” she said. She described a scene where she had to dive without a breathing apparatus. “It was a scene where my character had to pull her friend up. I had to pull the actor while they were resisting, and I did the entire scene without a stunt double,” she revealed, leaving the hosts visibly stunned.
“My eyesight is poor, and I usually wear contacts, but I had to take them out for that scene. I was essentially blind, moving at a 45-degree angle guided only by faint, blurry lights,” she explained. “I made it partway down, but my lungs were screaming for air. I came up gasping the second the camera rolled. I honestly thought I wasn’t going to make it. I was so small back then, and because I was wearing lead weights to stay submerged, I couldn’t swim up fast enough.”
Reflecting on the experience, Park Min Young said, “It made me realize that being an actor isn’t easy. While there are stunt doubles, the difference was too noticeable. I’m the type who swims well and works hard, so I did it myself. But after that shoot, I never claimed to be a good swimmer again.”
Park Min Young had previously sparked concern when she revealed she had lost down to 37 kg (about 81.5 lbs) for her role in Marry My Husband, which aired in January 2024.
