The Supreme Court has officially upheld a 7-year prison sentence for a female “broadcast jockey (BJ)” who blackmailed singer and musical actor Kim Junsu out of 840 million KRW (approx. 620,000 USD) over the course of nearly four years.
On May 1st, the Seoul High Court sentenced BJ A to seven years in prison for extortion, a decision she appealed. However, the Supreme Court’s Third Division rejected her appeal on June 23rd, finalizing the ruling from the appellate court.
A was a BJ on SOOP (previously AfreecaTV) and was indicted on charges of blackmailing Kim Junsu between September 2020 and October 2024. Over that period, she contacted him 101 times, threatening to release private recordings of their conversations unless he gave her money.
During her first trial, A’s legal team pleaded for leniency, stating that she had suffered from a propofol addiction and wasn’t thinking clearly. “She didn’t approach the victim with a plan to record him,” they explained, “Her father is battling prostate cancer, and some of the money was used for medical expenses. She deeply regrets her actions.”
In January 2025, prosecutors sought a 7-year sentence, and the next month, the court ruled in line with that request and ordered the confiscation of mobile phones used in the crime. During the second trial in May, A’s appeal was rejected, and the original sentence was upheld.
In her final statement, A said, “I tried to keep things secret and made efforts to recover from the mental damage and our relationship, but communicating with him wasn’t easy. I’ve continued writing letters of apology and showing remorse to help the victim recover from the wounds. I swear on my life that I will never cause the same harm to the victim again.”
Meanwhile, Kim Junsu has previously spoken about the emotional toll the case has taken: “I see it as my mistake. Since the incident, I’ve stopped meeting people outside of business. In a way, I’m thankful to her—because she made me realize I shouldn’t put myself in those kinds of situations anymore.”
His agency Palmtree Island also released a statement: “A deliberately recorded her conversations with Kim Junsu for illegal purposes and threatened to spread them on social media. Even though he did nothing wrong, one baseless article could damage his reputation beyond repair. A told him, ‘You have everything to lose. I don’t.'”
