Lee Chang Dong’s Possible Love has unveiled its first trailer as the filmmaker’s latest feature expands its international festival run.
The Netflix film has been invited to the Zabaltegi-Tabakalera competition at the 74th San Sebastian International Film Festival, the Gala Premiere section of the 22nd Zurich Film Festival and the Special Presentations section of the 45th Vancouver International Film Festival.
Those appearances follow previously announced selections at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, the 51st Toronto International Film Festival and the 64th New York Film Festival.
Possible Love centers on two married couples whose lives intersect through the making of a documentary: laid-off worker Ho Seok (played by Sul Kyung Gu) and his wife Mi Ok (Jeon Do Yeon), and documentary filmmaker Ye Ji (Cho Yeo Jeong) and her husband Sang Woo (Zo In Sung).
The first trailer opens with Mi Ok walking alone through a wooded path at dawn as she says, “It was such a strange feeling. Like I’d turned into someone else.”
Later, while riding in a car with Ho Seok, he tells her, “If you want to cry, just cry,” and she finally breaks down.
The trailer also shows Mi Ok sitting before Ye Ji’s documentary camera and recalling a workers’ strike. “When the strike started, I didn’t know it’d turn out this way,” she says, as Ho Seok quietly listens beside her.
When Ye Ji cautiously suggests interviewing Ho Seok as well, Mi Ok responds that he won’t do it, hinting at the distance that remains between the two women despite Ye Ji’s growing involvement in the couple’s lives.
Speaking to Sang Woo about her subjects, Ye Ji says, “I’m trying to love those people. I’m a documentary filmmaker.”
But the divide between the couples soon comes into sharper focus. During what begins as a friendly meal together, Sang Woo tells his wife, “You’re different from those people.”
The four eventually agree to take a summer vacation together, setting the stage for their differing lives, relationships and hidden desires to collide.
Possible Love marks Lee’s latest feature following Burning and Poetry. The film opens in theaters September 23rd before arriving on Netflix November 6th.
