Heo Nam Jun is looking back on the moment that helped carry him through his years as an unknown actor.
In a video released July 1st on Harper’s Bazaar Korea’s YouTube, Heo named his appearance in IU’s music video for “Never Ending Story,” the title track from her remake album A Flower Bookmark 3, as one of the most overwhelming moments of his career.
“Every day felt like a party, right up until the day I went to set,” he said. “Just knowing that someone like IU knew I existed in this world made me feel like I had no regrets left.”
His connection to IU did not end with the music video. Heo recently made a brief but memorable appearance in the hit MBC Friday-Saturday drama Perfect Crown as a blind date for Sung Hee Joo, played by IU.
Heo said the thing that helped him get through his long stretch of obscurity was his optimism. “I was more positive than I thought,” he said, recalling how even the smallest roles felt like a reason to celebrate with friends.
He said he threw parties with his friends when he had a brief line in the film Night in Paradise and again when he made his debut in Hostage: Missing Celebrity. For Heo, it was never about the size of the role. It was about celebrating the fact that he had taken another step forward as an actor and waiting for the next opportunity.
He also offered some grounded advice while responding to fans’ concerns. “One way is to not stay too long in the thought that you have no idea how to live your life,” he said. “Depending on how you choose to think, even something heavy can feel a little lighter, and that kind of mindset can be trained.”
At the same time, Heo stressed that staying positive does not mean struggling alone. “If you are in a really difficult situation, you should not try to endure it by yourself,” he said. “Be honest with the people around you and ask for help.”
For Heo, keeping a positive outlook matters — but so does having the courage to let others in.
