Former WINNER member Nam Tae Hyun has been sentenced to prison for drunk driving.
The Seoul Western District Court held a sentencing hearing for Nam, who was indicted on charges including violation of the Road Traffic Act (DUI), on April 9th.
The court sentenced him to one year in prison and a 1 million won fine ($674). The ruling stated that failure to pay the fine would result in detention in a correctional facility.
The court cited several factors in handing down a strict sentence, stating, “The defendant’s confession and expression of remorse, his repeat offense of drunk driving despite a prior fine for the same violation and the fact that he committed the offense during his probation period following confirmed drug charges were all taken into account.”
Nam Tae Hyun crashed into the central reservation near Dongjak Bridge on Gangbyeonbuk-ro toward Ilsan at around 4:10 AM on April 27th of last year, while attempting to overtake another vehicle. His blood alcohol level at the time reportedly exceeded the legal limit for license cancellation, which is 0.08% or higher.
He also faces charges for speeding, having driven at 182 km/h (about 113 mph) in a zone with an 80 km/h (50 mph) speed limit. Fortunately, the accident did not result in any injuries.
During the final hearing on March 12th, prosecutors requested a sentence of one year and six months in prison and a 1 million won fine, citing the severity of the crime and the fact that it occurred during his probation period.
Nam Tae Hyun previously received a 6 million won fine ($4046) in March 2023 for a separate drunk driving incident that occurred during a drug investigation. In 2024, he was indicted for violating the Narcotics Control Act and received a one-year prison sentence, suspended for two years.
