Kim Hye Yoon is ready to give audiences a chill this spring with her new horror film, Salmokji: Whispering Water.
She also took a moment to send a brief but sweet message of support to her former co-star, Byeon Woo Seok, as he prepares for his drama’s premiere.
Set to hit theaters on April 8th, Salmokji: Whispering Water marks the feature directorial debut of Lee Sang Min. The supernatural thriller follows a film crew that discovers a mysterious entity on a digital road-view map. When they head to a remote reservoir for reshoots, they encounter something terrifying lurking in the deep, dark water.
Kim Hye Yoon stars as Han Su In, a composed production director at a road-view service company. “I’ve always enjoyed horror films and hoped to try the genre someday,” Kim shared. “The script was really engaging, and the idea of a ghost underwater felt very fresh. I was drawn to the idea of being pulled into a mystery with no end in sight.”
Playing a character who remains calm in a crisis wasn’t easy. Kim noted that much of her performance had to be conveyed solely through her facial expressions and her gaze. She also opened up about the physical challenges of filming in the water.
“I actually like being in the water, so I wasn’t very scared at first,” she recalled. “But it became frightening once I was fully submerged during filming. My co-star Lee Jong Won was so experienced in those scenes that watching him gave me the confidence to push through my fear.”
Support for Kim’s big-screen return has been overwhelming. At a recent VIP premiere, cast and crew from her hit drama Lovely Runner and the variety show Fresh off the Sea showed up in full force to cheer her on.
“My friends told me, ‘We came because of you, but the movie was really scary.’” Kim laughed. “They said they had to close their eyes because it was so frightening, and even the sound scared them. I also remember people saying there were a lot of camera angles they’d never seen before.”
Salmokji: Whispering Water premieres on April 8th, exactly two years to the day since Lovely Runner first aired in 2024. Meanwhile, her former leading man, Byeon Woo Seok, is gearing up for the April 10th premiere of his new MBC drama, Perfect Crown.
When asked if the two had exchanged words of encouragement during their busy schedules, Kim offered a simple, supportive wish: “I hope we both do well.”
