Netflix has officially announced the production of a KPop Demon Hunters sequel.
TUDUM by Netflix and other outlets reported on March 12th that the streaming giant has entered into a multi-year exclusive animation partnership with Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the co-directors of KPop Demon Hunters, formalizing the creation of a sequel.
The release date for the sequel has not been disclosed, and it is currently in the early stages of production.
“I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters,” said Kang. “There’s so much more to this world we have built, and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.”
Appelhans added, “These characters are like family to us, their world has become our second home. We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them, and watch them evolve — and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation, and story can come together.”
KPop Demon Hunters follows the K-pop girl group Huntrix as they protect the world from evil spirits. The film features K-pop idols and incorporates Korean cultural elements like bathhouses, traditional medical clinics, kimbap, and cup noodles.
Released in June last year, the film surpassed 500 million global views, dethroning Squid Game to become Netflix’s highest-grossing content. Its original song, “Golden,” topped the Billboard Hot 100.
The film has won several major awards, including Best Animated Film and Best Original Song at the Golden Globe Awards, Best Feature-Length Animation and Best Original Song at the Critics’ Choice Awards and Best Song Written for Visual Media at the Grammy Awards in the United States.
