Shin Hye Sun pulled back the curtain on her experience filming the global Netflix hit The Art of Sarah.
The series follows a Korean-American woman whose ambition drives her to create a fake luxury brand targeting the wealthy elite. As she dives into the world of high-end fashion and deception, her scheme unravels in this thrilling crime drama.
Despite her seasoned career, Shin admitted that she faced moments of deep self-doubt during production. She highlighted the interrogation scenes as particularly grueling.
“Honestly, everything was difficult,” she confessed. “The interrogation room scenes were the hardest. I felt so much anxiety because I didn’t have a set plan for how to execute the performance. Acting in front of the camera without a clear plan was terrifying.”
She recalled, “As an actor, it’s incredibly unsettling not knowing how to act in front of the camera, and that’s exactly how I felt during the interrogation scene. Lee Jun Hyuk suggested we do a read-through before we started filming, but the timing didn’t work out, so we couldn’t. I think the pressure from that made me feel sick.”
Fortunately, Shin wasn’t alone. The series marks her first time working with Lee Jun Hyuk since their breakout roles in the 2017 hit drama Stranger. She credits their long-standing trust for getting her through the shoot.
“I don’t think I could have finished filming if Lee Jun Hyuk hadn’t been there,” she said. “There were moments where I just had to trust his energy and follow his lead. If it weren’t for his flow, I would have lost my way. It might sound cliché, but our chemistry was genuinely great.”
Shin also shared a surprisingly relatable connection to her character’s obsession with high society.
“In my 20s, I didn’t necessarily dislike luxury goods; I just ignored them because I couldn’t afford them,” she joked. She noted that she empathized with Sarah Kim’s desire to “look the part,” regardless of the price tag. “Sarah probably wanted to make even a $75 bag look like a million bucks. I understood that drive to raise your own value.”
