Jang Dong Ju revealed that a terrifying phone hacking and blackmail scheme was the reason behind his sudden disappearance and cryptic behavior last year.
The actor took to social media to share a harrowing confession on January 29th. “One day last summer, I received a call from an unknown number,” he began. “It was a man who knew my exact movements. His voice is still vivid in my memory. He asked, ‘Jang Dong Ju, you went here on this date, didn’t you?’ When I looked up the number, it was a burner phone.”
Jang described the nightmare that followed. The hacker sent him personal photos from his gallery, screenshots of private conversations and his contact list, proving his phone had been completely compromised.
“The blackmail began, and from that day until today, I have been living in hell every single day,” he wrote. Despite changing his number three times, the hacker continued to track him, demanding money and obedience. “The man demanded everything I could never do, and I had no choice but to follow his precise instructions.”
The extortion took a devastating financial toll. Jang confessed that in his desperation to stop the leaks, he borrowed money by any means necessary, eventually dragging his family into financial ruin.
“My family even sold our house for me,” he lamented. “The urgent debts created more debt. We lost billions of won that way. My family was plunged into suffering, and I was buried under a mountain of debt.”
He admitted that his attempts to protect his secrets only led to more lies and pain for those around him. “I felt like I was trapped in a swamp, unable to escape no matter how hard I tried. Now, I have nothing left to lose.”

This confession sheds light on a disturbing incident from last October, when Jang posted a black image on social media with the caption “I’m sorry” before going incommunicado. At the time, his agency stated they had confirmed his whereabouts and that there were “no particular issues,” simply apologizing for the concern. It is now clear that the post was a cry for help during the height of his ordeal.
