Hwang Jung Eum has officially registered her one-person agency, prompting speculation that the actress may be preparing to return to the spotlight following her embezzlement case.
According to StarNews on January 23rd, Hwang’s company, Hunminjungeum Entertainment, completed its registration as a licensed entertainment management agency on the 22nd—nearly 13 years after it was first founded in July 2013.
The agency is wholly owned by Hwang Jung Eum, who is listed as CEO, with her mother also registered as an in-house director. Under Korean law, entertainment management companies must be formally registered with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to operate legally.
With the paperwork now finalized, Hwang is expected to begin laying the groundwork for future activities under her own management. She previously terminated her exclusive contract with Y.One Entertainment on November 27th last year after revelations surfaced that she had embezzled company funds.
Earlier this month, the agency faced criticism after it was revealed to have been operating without proper registration—a legal requirement introduced in 2014. In response, Hwang released a statement explaining that her company had relied on services provided by her former agency and that she believed separate registration was unnecessary at the time. She added that the registration process began in November and that she personally completed all required education courses.
The actress was sentenced in September to two years in prison, suspended for four years, for embezzling approximately 4.3 billion KRW (approx. 3 million USD). Prosecutors said she transferred company loan funds into her personal account on 13 occasions, with around 4.2 billion KRW invested in cryptocurrency. Hwang admitted to all charges and repaid the full amount in two installments last May and June.
With her legal case resolved and her agency now officially registered, industry attention is turning to whether this move signals the start of Hwang Jung Eum’s comeback.
