Kim Hye Yoon is pulling back the curtain on the brutal years before her rise.
Appearing on tvN’s You Quiz on the Block on the 14th, the actress spoke candidly about spending seven years as an unknown performer, enduring relentless rejection, verbal abuse, and even frostbite before finally breaking through.
Kim revealed she auditioned more than 100 times, sometimes up to three in a single day. “I went in thinking, ‘I’m getting rejected again today,’ every time,” she said, adding that her height became a constant source of insecurity. “I’m 158 cm, but I told people I was 160. Even when I got busted, I kept insisting I was 160.”
The emotional toll was just as heavy. “I was scolded in every way imaginable. Some words, I can’t even say on TV. I heard a lot of outright insults,” she recalled. When things got overwhelming, she said she would cry alone on buses and subways after shoots.
During that stretch, Kim appeared in more than 50 projects in minor roles, starting at age 17 and often without an agency. She bounced between acting classes and filming, sometimes asking her father to drive her to remote or early-morning sets, or riding in vehicles meant for background actors.
One of her most startling memories came from winter shoots. “Staff offered heaters, but I felt like I didn’t deserve one yet. Saying ‘I’m fine’ became automatic,” she said. “In high school, I got frostbite on my fingers. They swelled up, and eventually my fingernails fell off.”
Asked by host Yoo Jae Suk if she ever doubted her path, Kim didn’t hesitate. “After doing extra and supporting roles for so long, I kept asking myself, ‘Am I even good at acting?’ ‘Is this really my job?’” To stay steady, she imposed strict routines: one movie a day, one hour of exercise. “Without rules, the road felt endless.”
Her turning point came after seven years of struggle, when she beat 200-to-1 odds to land a role in SKY Castle. Even then, she assumed rejection was inevitable. “They handed me seven pages of lines about Nietzsche’s concept of freedom,” she recalled. “I searched everything, studied nonstop, and went in.”
That audition changed everything. Kim went on to deliver a breakout performance as Ye Seo. Curious, she later asked the director why she was chosen. “He told me, ‘You were the only one who actually understood the lines and acted them.’”
Seven years of struggle ended in a single breakout role. Kim Hye Yoon’s story is a stark reminder that her overnight success was anything but.
