Kwak Do Won has broken his long silence with a heartfelt apology as he resumes his career with the TVING original series Villains, starring Yoo Ji Tae, Lee Beom Soo, Lee Min Jung and Kwak Do Won.

On December 19th, Kwak released a personal letter addressing the drunk driving incident that halted his career. “It took a long time to write this,” he began. “There was fear, great shame, and I couldn’t easily utter any words in the face of my wrongdoing.”

He continued, “First and foremost, I once again offer my deepest apologies to everyone who was hurt and disappointed by my mistake. I committed the grave error of drunk driving in 2022. I sincerely apologize.”

Kwak reflected on his time away from the spotlight. “I have spent countless hours reflecting on myself, questioning whether I am fit to stand before people since that incident,” he wrote. “I deeply contemplated what kind of attitude I should live with as a person, even before being an actor. I have only now realized that everything I once took for granted was never truly a given.”

He also addressed his delayed return. “I am sincerely sorry for not apologizing sooner and for missing the opportunity to convey my position. Moving forward, I intend to demonstrate the responsible demeanor I have not shown until now through my actions. I will not seek forgiveness quickly. I will prove myself with my life, not just with words.”

Kwak Do Won was booked by police in September 2022 for drunk driving. He drove approximately 10 km (about 6 miles) in Jeju City while intoxicated. At the time, his blood alcohol content exceeded the legal limit for license revocation. He was indicted for violating the Road Traffic Act and received a fine of 10 million won ($7,000).
