Choi Sooyoung is diving headfirst into fangirl territory—this time, as a lawyer.
In Genie TV’s new series Liar, Lawyer, Choi plays star attorney Maeng Se Na, who takes on the case of her ultimate bias: idol singer Do Ra Ik, played by Kim Jae Young, after he’s accused of murder. The drama is directed by Lee Kwang Young, known for Call It Love (2023), and written by Kim Da Rin.
Se Na, dubbed “the villains’ lawyer,” has built her reputation by taking on only the most despised criminal cases. Behind closed doors, she’s a 10-year stan of the boy band Gold Boys—and when her bias is in trouble, she buries her fangirl side to defend him in court.
Ra Ik, the group’s visual and lead vocalist, is a star who’s grown tired of the stage. The once-joyful spotlight now feels like a burden, with cheers from fans turning into emotional debt. When he’s dragged into a murder scandal, he rips off his mask and throws away his future.
Choi shared, “I think it’s because I’ve been on the receiving end of fans’ love that I couldn’t put the script down once I started reading. This is my first time playing a lawyer, and also my first time playing a fangirl. The character has two very different sides, which I found fascinating. I’m excited to show a new side of myself.”
Kim added, “It’s such a fun concept, and the mix of genres makes it all the more exciting. There’s definitely pressure, but I’m enjoying the process.”
Liar, Lawyer is set to premiere in the second half of 2025.
