“Asia Prince” Jang Keun Suk dropped by Radio Star for the first time—33 years into his career.
During the episode, Jang candidly revealed he had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer last year. “Due to the medical strike at the time, I couldn’t get surgery for 10 months,” he said. “I didn’t even tell my parents. I didn’t want to make them worry unnecessarily.” Now fully recovered, Jang reflected on how the experience changed his outlook on life.
Currently, Jang is actively working in Japan as both an actor and a singer. In addition to solo and unit projects, he’s even formed a five-member band that performs street busking shows—something that drew admiration from the show’s hosts. He also noted that fans in their 70s attend his EDM concerts, surprising everyone with the wide range of his fanbase.
Jang also gave his own breakdown of Hallyu’s generational history. He identified Cho Yong Pil and Kim Yeon Ja as the first wave, Bae Yong Jun and Lee Byung Hun as the second, and named himself alongside Kara, FT Island, Park Shin Hye, and TVXQ as the third. “It’s really like the Warring States period,” he joked, “and for the fourth generation, there’s BTS, Park Seo Joon, and Park Bo Gum. These days, the fifth wave includes Chae Jong Hyeop.”
The actor also reacted to talk that he owns a building in Shibuya, Japan. At first caught off guard, he confirmed with a smile, “Yes, that’s my building.” When comedian Kim Shin Young mentioned that women line up to take photos in front of it, Jang laughed in surprise and said, “How do you know? Yeah, it’s a café.”
