Netflix has released a behind-the-scenes Q&A with stars Kim Tae Ri and Hong Kyung, the voices behind Lost in Starlight—its first-ever Korean animated feature.
In the interview, Kim Tae Ri shared what drew her to the project: “The script and the narrations were so beautiful. Reading them made my heart flutter. Just imagining myself performing those lines made me excited.”
When asked about her character, Nan Yeong, Kim pointed to her quiet strength. “I think her charm lies in her ordinariness. The way she carries her wounds, falls in love, and parts ways felt so universally relatable—it was like looking at a version of myself,” she said.
The film also incorporated live-action elements, which the actress found creatively fulfilling. “Some scenes were shot like stage performances—I memorized the full dialogue and performed in long takes. It didn’t matter what my face looked like. What mattered was being immersed in the moment.”
Working with Hong Kyung again after their previous project, Revenant, also made the experience special. “Since this was our first voice acting role, we talked a lot. We helped each other through the challenges of trying not to get stuck in rigid patterns when focusing on voice,” she explained.
Her favorite line? Her character’s closing narration: “Don’t forget, Jay. Somewhere out there in the universe, there’s at least one person always rooting for you.” “It’s the kind of comfort you’d want to hear from someone you’ve lost—or say to someone you love,” she said.

Hong Kyung, who plays Jay, said he was drawn to the story’s emotional universality. “Even though it’s set in an unexplored universe, the feelings people share – past and present – remain unchanged,” he said. Jay’s connection to music is what sealed the role for him. “Exploring what music meant to him and why he hesitated—it really pulled me in,” he shared.
The film’s live-action component also left a mark. “I felt the freedom of performing on stage. Since we were capturing subtle expressions through natural movement, everything flowed in the right direction,” he said.
As for working with Kim Tae Ri, Hong had nothing but praises: “She doesn’t just act – she dives deep into the work itself and brings that collaborative energy. I tried my best to match that.”
Hong’s most memorable scene? The scene where Nanyeong and Jay first bump into each other. “It’s the moment where everything begins, so it really stuck with me,” he said.
