Lee Seung Gi released a heartfelt statement through his agency on April 29th that he has decided to cut ties with his in-laws.
“It is with a heavy heart that I share this message,” he began.
Lee explained that although his father-in-law had previously received a fine in a retrial over ongoing allegations of illegal activity, he was recently indicted once again on similar charges.
“Having trusted in family and awaited the outcome, I am devastated by my father-in-law’s repeated misconduct,” he said.
Lee also reflected on his past handling of the issue, stating, “I deeply regret speaking rashly last year without thoroughly reviewing the situation.” He continued, “I believe that unlawful acts must be justly punished. I sincerely apologize to the victims who suffered due to my premature judgment, and I also extend my heartfelt apologies to everyone who placed their trust in me.”
He went on to add, “This incident has irreparably damaged the trust within the family. After much deliberation, my wife and I have decided to cut ties with my in-laws.”
Lee concluded by pledging, “I will continue to uphold stronger values and live with a sense of responsibility for a healthier society.”
Lee Seung Gi married actress Lee Da In, daughter of actress Kyeon Mi Ri, in 2023. Since then, he has been drawn into various controversies related to his wife’s family.
Last June, when the Supreme Court overturned a previous acquittal and ordered a retrial for his father-in-law over stock manipulation charges, Lee’s agency issued a strong statement.
“We earnestly ask that you refrain from attacking the family. Lee Seung Gi is now a husband, a father, and a son-in-law, carrying many responsibilities. His in-laws have also become grandparents. Moreover, the issues at hand occurred before his marriage and are matters for the family to resolve,” the agency stated at the time.
The statement itself stirred public debate, and now, Lee Seung Gi has made his position clear with this latest development.
