It has come to light that the father of NewJeans member Hyein opposed the lawsuit to terminate the exclusive contract with their agency, ADOR.
NewJeans and ADOR have been embroiled in a contract dispute since November of last year, and it was revealed for the first time that there was a disagreement between the members’ parents at the first hearing on April 3rd at the Seoul Central District Court over the lawsuit about NewJeans’ exclusive contract with ADOR.
During the hearing, the judge asked the members’ lawyer, “So does this mean the lawsuit can move forward now that it’s been decided who has legal authority over Defendant 4?” The judge was confirming whether the disagreement between the parents, who both have a say in legal decisions for their underage child, had been settled.
Among the NewJeans members, Hyein and Haerin are minors. Some initially speculated that the disagreement may have come from one of Haerin’s parents, but it was confirmed that it was actually Hyein’s father who had expressed opposition.
Due to differing opinions between the two parents, Hyein’s mother filed a petition at the Seoul Family Court seeking to limit the father’s parental authority only for this lawsuit. The court ruled in favor of the mother, stating, “It is appropriate to allow the petitioner to exercise parental rights alone.”
In response, all of the NewJeans members’ parents released a joint statement on April 4th, saying, “Reports by some media outlets claiming there is division among the members’ parents are completely false.”
They emphasized, “Parental authority is a personal family matter. We hope that this issue will not continue to be maliciously linked to the legal dispute with ADOR,” adding, “We can’t send our children back to a company that uses their family issues for media play.”
