Kim Soo Hyun gave a press conference at the Stanford Hotel in Seoul yesterday to address the controversy surrounding his relationship with the late Kim Sae Ron.
During the 40-minute press conference, Kim Soo Hyun broke into tears as he refuted claims of dating the late Kim Sae Ron during her minor years and pressuring her over debt. However, some netizens weren’t buying it, questioning the genuineness of both his words and his emotions.
The response to Kim Soo Hyun’s tears online was mostly icy. Across social media and forums, people posted comments like, “What is this, a drama scene?” “He’s putting on an Oscar-worthy crying act with full hair and makeup,” and “Did he get all dolled up just for this?” Others poked fun at his phrasing, with remarks like, “That ‘life of an actor’ and ‘life of a star’ line had me cracking up.” Some didn’t hold back criticism either, saying things like, “Well, he’s an actor for a reason, right?” and “Those are some crocodile tears.”
Kim Soo Hyun began the press conference by saying, “First of all, I’m sorry. It seems that many people are suffering because of me.” However, the ‘suffering’ he referred to was not that of the deceased’s family but rather his own close associates, agency staff and fans.
He explained, “As the lead actor of Queen of Tears, there were many things I had to protect, which is why I denied the dating rumors.” He added, “Whenever I had to choose between being human Kim Soo Hyun and star Kim Soo Hyun, I always chose the latter.”
He firmly stated, “I never had a relationship with the deceased when she was a minor, and it is also untrue that her tragic decision was due to my neglect or pressure from my agency regarding her debts.” He further claimed that the evidence presented by the late Kim Sae Ron’s family was ‘fabricated,’ citing an analysis showing that the authors of the 2016 and 2018 KakaoTalk messages were different individuals.
He concluded by saying, “I will ensure that all evidence presented by the family is thoroughly verified through official investigations.” Meanwhile, his legal representatives announced that they had filed criminal charges against the family and a YouTube content creator, along with a lawsuit seeking 12 billion KRW ($8.2 million) in damages.
Meanwhile, the family of the late Kim Sae Ron disclosed forensic-recovered evidence, including mobile messages between her and Kim Soo-hyun from 2016, a 2024 conversation with an acquaintance, and an undelivered letter she had written. They stated, “We are presenting this evidence to put an end to the controversy.”
