Wheesung was found dead at his home today.

Wheesung was discovered in his apartment in Seoul at around 6:20 PM on March 10th, according to police and fire authorities. Emergency responders were dispatched after receiving a report from his family.

Authorities believe he had been deceased for a significant amount of time before being found. They are currently investigating the exact cause of death, considering possibilities such as a drug overdose or suicide. The police stated, “So far, no signs of forced entry or criminal activity have been found,” adding that they are looking into whether he left a note and other circumstances surrounding his death.

Wheesung was scheduled to hold a joint concert titled The Story with singer KCM at EXCO Auditorium in Daegu on March 15, making the news even more heartbreaking. On March 6th, he posted a photo on social media with the caption, “I’m off the diet! Looking forward to seeing you on the 15th!”

Debuting in 2002 with his first album Like a Movie, Wheesung gained immense popularity with his hit song “Can’t You?”. He went on to release numerous hit tracks, including “With Me,” “Insomnia,” and “A Year Gone By.”

In 2017, he established his independent label, Real Slow Company. While actively promoting, he was deeply affected by the sudden passing of his longtime manager, who had overseen the company.

Wheesung later faced legal troubles related to drug use. In 2021, he was sentenced to one year in prison with two years of probation for illegally using the anesthetic propofol. He was found guilty of purchasing 3,910 mL of propofol for 6.5 million KRW and using 3,690 mL on 11 occasions between September and November 2019.

Additionally, he was found unconscious in Seoul after injecting etomidate in March and April 202o. While etomidate has effects similar to propofol, it had not been classified as a narcotic at the time. However, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety proposed a revision to the Narcotics Control Act Enforcement Decree, newly designating etomidate and six other substances as narcotics or psychotropic drugs on February 28th, 2020.
