Yoo Ah In has been released from detention after receiving a suspended sentence in his appeal trial for drug-related charges.
The Seoul High Court sentenced Yoo Ah In to one year in prison with two years of probation on February 18th, on charges of violating the Narcotics Control Act. He was also ordered to pay a fine of 2 million KRW, complete 80 hours of drug rehabilitation education, and pay a forfeit of 1.54 million KRW. This ruling is significantly lighter than the four-year prison sentence originally sought by the prosecution.
Previously, Yoo Ah In was sentenced to one year in prison and a fine of 2 million KRW in his first trial in September last year and was immediately taken into detention. However, his sentence was reduced to a suspended sentence in the second trial, and he was released from detention.
Yoo Ah In was charged with administering medical narcotics—including propofol, midazolam, ketamine, and remimazolam—181 times between September 2020 and March 2022. He also obtained over 1,100 sleeping pills illegally under another person’s name on 44 occasions between May 2021 and August 2023.
Additionally, he was accused of smoking marijuana in the U.S. with four accomplices. He was also accused of encouraging a YouTuber named Hairmon to smoke marijuana.
During his first trial, Yoo Ah In was taken into custody, but he has consistently expressed remorse for his actions. The court appears to have considered his repentance and the fact that this was his first offense in reducing his sentence.
Following the appeal verdict, Yoo Ah In was immediately released from detention. However, there has been no official statement regarding his potential return to the entertainment industry.
