As Squid Game Season 2 prepares for its day-after-Christmas debut, international critics who’ve screened the series are lauding the sophomore season.

The Daily List’s film critic Aayush Sharma praised the new season, tweeting, “Squid Game Season 2 is a masterstroke in escalating the stakes while delving deeper into the human psyche. The plot seamlessly intertwines high-octane action sequences with psychological mind games. Lee Jung Jae is magnificent. It’s bigger and better.”

MPA-certified entertainment journalist Rama echoed the sentiment, particularly highlighting Lee Jung Jae’s performance: “Squid Game season 2 was a lot crazier than the first one. It even had its own ‘The Deer Hunter’ moment that got me all on pins & needles, squeamish. This time it’s retribution-based & action-packed. Lee Jung Jae once again delivered a ferocious performance.”

Critics particularly praise Lee Jung Jae for maintaining the series’ core intensity while navigating more complex character dynamics than in the previous season. His powerful delivery of the season’s central message has drawn widespread acclaim.

The series has already made history by securing a Golden Globe nomination for Best Drama Series before its release, an unprecedented achievement in the awards’ history. While the show didn’t receive any acting nominations this time around, unlike Season 1, the pre-release nomination marks a significant milestone.

The highly anticipated second season of the 2021 Netflix phenomenon features an impressive new cast including Jo Yu Ri, TOP, Park Sung Hoon, Kang Ha Neul, Yim Si Wan, Lee Jin Wook, and more. The six-episode season is set to drop on Netflix at 5 PM KST on December 26th.
