IU makes another impressive transformation in Hirokazu Kore-eda’s new movie Broker, which got invited to the 75th Cannes Film Festival. It’s a feat that she achieved with the first commercial film she took the lead role in.
Broker follows the unexpected and special journey of those intertwined over a baby box. IU plays So Young, the mother of the baby left in the baby box.
She sets off on an unexpected journey with Sang Hyun (Song Kang Ho) and Dong Soo (Kang Dong Won), the brokers that promised to find suitable parents for the baby. But So Young doesn’t reveal why she left the baby in the baby box or why she has returned.
From expressions to gestures, IU has expressed So Young in detail. She heightens the expectations by perfectly pulling off the multi-layered emotions of her character with her unique and “calm” performance.
Kore-eda admired IU’s acting, saying, “I felt like she portrayed the character of So Young just like I had imagined. She delivered an unbelievably accurate performance, so much that I couldn’t believe I wrote those lines myself.”
Meanwhile, Broker is slated for release in June.
