Ahn Hyo Seop, who has always been a fan of movies and dramas, made his debut with MBC’s historical fiction drama, Splash Splash Love (2015). He left a clear impression as a supporting character with a twist in a short two-part series set in the Joseon Dynasty. Moreover, in MBC One More Happy Ending (2016), he played Ahn Jung Woo, a handsome tall young man with a straight-up, point-blank personality. In the same year, in the MBC’s weekend drama Happy Home (2016), he took on the role of Cheol Su, a silent and mysterious character, and showed decent acting.

One of the dramas he shined the most was SBS’s Still 17 (2018). He played the sweet and considerate guy, Gong Woo Jin, who claims to be the guardian of Woo Seo Ri (Shin Hye Sun), the girl who fell into a coma at the age of 17 and wakes up at 30. He also showed a vibrant teenage character in the same work, but surprisingly, it is said that the character has a completely opposite personality from Ahn Hyo Seop in real life. In addition, he got his skin tanned and received intense rowing training to perfectly portray Yoo Chan’s character. For this work, he won the Rookie of the Year award at the 2018 SBS Drama Awards.

In SBS’s Dr. Romantic 2 (2020), Ahn played the new male lead, Seo Woo Jin, a second-year GS fellow. He was the first to be cast in season 2 by the production crew, and he realistically showed how a selfish individual overcomes his tragic past to become a real doctor. Dr. Romantic 2 recorded double-digit ratings following season 1, and Ahn Hyo Seop earned the nickname ‘Sweet Doctor Seo.’ With this work, he won the Best New Actor Award in the TV category at the 56th Baeksang Arts Awards and the Excellence Award at the 2020 SBS Drama Awards. Recently, the news of Dr. Romantic season 3 in production has been reported, and expectations are high on whether we will be able to see Ahn Hyo Seop’s Seo Woo Jin again next summer.

Currently, Ahn Hyo Seop is playing various roles as the astrologer Haram in SBS’ fantasy romance drama Lovers of the Red Sky. He is showing a quality acting by juggling three characters at once: ‘Haram,’ the astrologer of Seomungwan, ‘Ilwolseong,’ the vengeful character filled with hatred toward the royal family, and ‘Haram-ma,’ the man who a devil possesses.

Next year, he is expected to meet viewers as third-generation chaebol Kang Tae Moo in a new SBS drama, A Business Proposal (working title). I look forward to enjoying the various characters and their personalities that Ahn Hyo Seop will show in the future.

Editor Seo Hayne: I like actors as they faithfully lead through their long running-time. I also like idols who accomplish everything on stage within 3 minutes.

Translator Cho EK: I’m a big fan of Korean dramas and movies.
