Hopeless tells the gritty story of a young boy named Yeon Gyu (Hong Xa Bin) who, desperate to escape his hellish reality, finds himself entangled in a dangerous world after meeting Chi Geon (Song Joong Ki), a mid-level boss in a crime syndicate.
Fresh off his success in films like Space Sweepers and dramas such as Vincenzo and Reborn Rich, Song Joong Ki is proving his versatile acting chops once again with the role of Chi Geon. The character is a canny figure who’s figured out how to survive in a brutal reality and takes an interest in Yeon Gyu, recognizing they share similar emotional scars.
Song effortlessly embodies the role, delivering a captivating performance with his enigmatic gaze, deep-toned voice, and a certain darkness that sets him apart from his previous characters.
Enamored with the script, Song even volunteered to star in the film pro bono. “I wanted to showcase a different acting style than I’ve done before, so I experimented a lot,” the actor shared. Director Kim Chang Hoon stated, “I wanted to draw out a coldness entirely different from the gentle image Song Joong Ki has shown before. Watching him act, I thought, ‘He really is Chi Geon.'”
Meanwhile, Hopeless, an official selection at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, will release on October 11th.
