TVING original series Study Group is officially coming back for a second season, with Hwang Min Hyun confirmed to reprise his lead role.
Production confirmed that singer-actor Hwang Min Hyun will reprise his role as the lead protagonist, Yoon Ga Min. Fresh off his military discharge last December, Hwang reportedly chose Study Group Season 2 as his comeback project without hesitation.
According to production company YLAB, Season 2 will be larger in scale. Yoon Ga Min and his study group, now closer than ever, will face a powerful new threat that affects students nationwide, expanding the story far beyond Yuseong Technical High School.
“Hwang Min Hyun has a deep understanding of the character,” the production team said. “Season 2 will reveal new sides of Ga Min, including his true motivation for wanting to study and the inner conflicts he faces, along with even more intense action.”
Study Group Season 1 was a major hit last year. Based on the popular webtoon of the same name, the series follows Ga Min’s efforts to form a study group at a school known for delinquent students.
The show topped TVING’s charts for five straight weeks and helped drive a surge in paid subscribers. It also found international success, ranking in the weekly Top 5 in 147 countries, including the U.S., Brazil, the UK, and France. Critically, it placed seventh on TIME magazine’s “Best K-Dramas of 2025” list and won Best Streaming Original Feature Film at the 2025 Asian Academy Creative Awards.
Season 2 is described as a “desperate yet thrilling story of academic survival,” promising deeper character backstories, new allies, and new villains.
With Hwang Min Hyun officially returning, Study Group Season 2 is expected to begin filming soon.
