The cast and director of Melo MovieChoi Woo Shik, Park Bo Young, Lee Jun Young, Jeon So Nee and director Oh Choong Hwan—came together on February 12th for the film’s official press conference.

Melo Movie follows a group of young adults navigating that uncertain stage in life where they want both love and success. As they cross paths, they become each other’s inspiration and help one another overcome personal struggles.

Returning to the romance genre after three years, Choi Woo Shik shared what drew him to the project. “First and foremost, I loved the script. I’ve worked with the writer before, so I already knew how great their script is, and that made the decision even easier,” he said. He plays Go Gyeom, a die-hard cinephile who becomes a film critic out of his love for movies. But, as Choi put it, “He dreams of watching every film in existence, but ends up loving Kim Movie (Park Bo Young) even more than movies themselves.” Comparing the role to his previous character in Our Beloved Summer, he added, “Choi Woong was more introverted and tended to keep things to himself, whereas Go Gyeom is the opposite—he’s outgoing and relies on those around him to work through his struggles.”

Park Bo Young takes on the role of Kim Moo Bi, a woman who grew up hating films but ironically becomes a director. Explaining why she joined the cast, she said, “I was drawn to the realistic love story and the way it portrays young people chasing their dreams. Plus, I had no reason to say no with director Oh Choong Hwan at the helm and Choi Woo Shik as Go Gyeom.” As for her character, whose name alone sparks curiosity, she shared, “Her father was a huge movie lover, and she always felt like she came second to films. That’s why she grew up hating them. But later, she throws herself into the film industry with this ‘What’s the big deal about movies anyway?’ attitude.” She added, “Go Gyeom keeps showing up in her quiet life and shakes things up.” She noted that this role differs from her past romantic comedies, “She has a more cynical side compared to my previous characters, so I focused on getting that tone right.”

Lee Jun Young plays Hong Si Jun, a struggling composer who calls himself a genius, even though reality says otherwise. Describing his character, he said, “He truly believes he’s a musical genius, but in reality, he’s just another 30-something barely scraping by.”

Jeon So Nee stars as Son Joo Ah, Hong Si Jun’s ex-girlfriend, who has become a scriptwriter. “She breaks off their seven-year relationship to chase her own dreams,” Jeon explained. “The director and writer wanted her to be a fresh take on the ‘ex-girlfriend’ character, so I really tried to bring something different to the role.”

Lee Jun Young described the dynamic between Hong Si Jun and Son Joo Ah as “a mismatched Rubik’s cube,” adding, “I made an effort to approach Jeon So Nee first. We talked a lot—about the project and just everyday things—which helped us bond quickly and focus on our performances.” Jeon agreed, saying, “Having my closest on-set partner made it much easier for me to open up as well. Choi Woo Shik also pointed out that keeping that lingering feeling between Hong Si Jun and Son Joo Ah was key, and his advice helped a lot.”

Netflix’s Melo Movie is set to premiere worldwide on February 14—just in time for Valentine’s Day.
