Hyun Bin and Song Joong Ki are both promoting their latest films, but the stark difference in their box office results is grabbing attention.

Both actors are busy promoting their latest films, Harbin and Bogota: City of the Lost, through stage greetings, appearances on variety shows, and YouTube content.

Hyun Bin has been candid about his personal life, sharing stories about his wife, fellow actor Son Ye Jin, and their child—giving fans a glimpse into the details they’ve long been curious about. He also spoke about his role as Ahn Jung Geun in the film and admitted feeling sorry for how his wife may have felt lonely during the filming period. Son Ye Jin showed her support by attending Harbin‘s VIP event, which made the public love the couple even more. Song Joong Ki took a similar approach, sharing warm stories about his wife Katy and their two children, even bringing up his mother-in-law during interviews.

Both actors have established themselves as Hallyu stars. Hyun Bin became a household name with My Lovely Sam Soon, followed by Worlds Within and Secret Garden. Similarly, Song Joong Ki shot to fame with Sungkyunkwan Scandal and solidified his star power with his post-military comeback project, Descendants of the Sun.

While fans enjoyed seeing a more personal side of these once-reserved stars, the box office results revealed a clear divide. Song Joong Ki recently teared up while addressing the lukewarm reception of his recent films, citing “the challenges facing the film industry.” However, his comments drew some criticism, with remarks like, “Not all films struggle just because the industry is having a hard time.”

The box office numbers speak for themselves. According to the Korean Film Council on January 20th, Harbin attracted 182,107 viewers over the weekend, topping the box office with a cumulative audience of 4,495,590. The film is nearing the 5-million mark, with its cast continuing to promote it actively.

In contrast, Bogota has struggled to make an impact. An industry insider commented, “Song Joong Ki showed a lot of affection for his family, perhaps more than necessary. Hyun Bin also opened up about his personal life, but for some reason, it didn’t translate into box office success for Song Joong Ki’s film. There’s also the difference between actors who have strong ticket power and those who don’t. While it’s understandable why Song Joong Ki felt emotional, it’s still unfortunate.”
