It has been revealed that film director Hong Sang Soo and actress Kim Min Hee are expecting a child. This news has attracted attention, especially with rumors that Director Hong has inherited a large amount of money. People are now wondering if their soon-to-be-born child will be able to receive a share of this inheritance.

During a YTN Radio show on January 17th, attorney Kim Mi Ru was asked, “Just like in the case of Jung Woo Sung, will the illegitimate child also inherit Director Hong’s wealth?” She responded, “An illegitimate child is still considered a child under the law, and direct descendants are entitled to inherit, according to Article 1 of the Civil Code. So, the child will certainly inherit.”
There have been rumors that Director Hong’s mother left him a large inheritance. It’s said that he inherited 120 billion KRW ($82.3 million) from his late mother, Jeon Ok Soon, who was the first female film producer in Korea and also ran a publishing business in Japan.
Lawyers have confirmed that if Director Hong inherited his mother’s wealth, the illegitimate child would also have inheritance rights. They explained that if Hong Sang Soo and his wife don’t divorce, the legal wife would inherit according to the law, with the typical distribution being 1.5 for the spouse and 1.1 for the children. However, they added that other factors could affect how the inheritance is divided.
If Director Hong leaves a will giving all his estate to Kim Min Hee and the illegitimate child, the inheritance could change. Attorney Park Kyung Nae pointed out, “In that case, the wife would only be entitled to a portion known as the ‘legitimate portion,’ which is 50% of the statutory inheritance share. So, she would receive much less than the full inheritance.”
