YoonA has officially chosen her next project — and it’s a major genre shift.
According to reports on May 9th, the Girls’ Generation star and actress has been cast as the lead in the Korean remake of the hit Japanese drama Unnatural.
YoonA will play Lim Do Eun, a forensic pathologist working at UDI, an investigative medical examiner unit that specializes in unnatural deaths. The character is described as someone with sharp instincts, a warm smile and an unwavering sense of determination. Though bright and easygoing, she’s also known for her fiery personality, relentless persistence and huge appetite — qualities that help her stand out as a rising star in the field.
In the original Japanese series, the role was played by acclaimed actress Satomi Ishihara.
First aired on Japan’s TBS in 2018, Unnatural follows forensic experts as they uncover the hidden truths behind suspicious deaths. The drama became a breakout hit not only in Japan but also among Korean drama fans, earning six awards at the 96th Television Drama Academy Awards in Japan, including Best Drama, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Screenplay, Best Director and Best OST.
The Korean remake will be directed by Park Yoo Young, known for The Kidnapping Day.
Industry attention has been especially high around YoonA’s next move following the success of JTBC’s King the Land in 2023 and tvN’s Bon Appétit, Your Majesty in 2025, both of which performed strongly domestically and internationally.
Rather than returning with another romantic comedy, YoonA is set to showcase a darker, more intense side of her acting through the mystery medical thriller.
