The seller who previously sparked controversy by listing a painting by webtoon artist and TV personality Kian84 for 150 million won (approximately $103,000) has now put a painting by WINNER member Mino up for sale online.
The seller recently listed Mino’s artwork “The Giraffe I Drew 1” on the secondhand marketplace Danggeun for 4.75 million won ($3,235).
The piece was originally showcased as part of Mino’s first solo exhibition Thanking You, which ran from December 2022 through February 2023.
The giraffe-themed series featured partial depictions of the animal, such as the neck or body, rather than full illustrations. At the time, Mino explained that the giraffe symbolized “ambition, desire and goals so high they can’t be measured.”
The seller previously drew attention after listing Kian84’s painting “The Starry Cheongdam” for 150 million KRW on the same platform. The artwork had originally been unveiled during Kian84’s first solo exhibition, Full Ownership, in 2022.
At the time, Kian84 made headlines for donating the exhibition’s entire 87 million KRW profit from ticket and artwork sales to a child welfare organization.
Because of that, the resale listing quickly became controversial, with many pointing out that the asking price far exceeded the total profits Kian84 himself reportedly earned from the exhibition. While the painting’s original sale price was never publicly confirmed, online users speculated the seller had dramatically inflated its value.
However, others argued that sellers are free to set any price they want in the resale market.
Possibly due to the backlash, the seller has since deleted the Kian84 listing.
Meanwhile, Mino is currently standing trial on allegations related to reportedly negligent service during his time as a public service worker at a facility in Seoul’s Mapo District between 2023 and 2024.
