A new AI-generated short film has sparked a legal firestorm after claiming to have permission to use a famous actress’s face, only for the star to reveal she had no idea the project even existed.

The actress at the center of the issue is Yeom Hye Ran. Sports DongA reported that the film, titled The Inspector (literal translation), was abruptly set to private after questions were raised regarding whether she had actually approved its production. The film had immediately gone viral for its “chillingly realistic” depiction of Yeom, using generative AI to recreate her facial expressions, body movements and even her specific vocal cadence.

While the project was initially marketed as an authorized AI film, both the actress and her agency, Ace Factory, stated they were “completely unaware” of its existence. In a phone interview with Sports DongA on March 31st, Ace Factory clarified that claims they had approved the use of the actress’s likeness were “not true,” adding that they would immediately demand the video’s removal.

Shortly after the agency’s response, The Inspector was pulled from public view. However, Ace Factory emphasized that they are taking the matter “extremely seriously” and are currently weighing their legal options.

Meanwhile, Yeom Hye Ran is currently promoting her latest film, My Name, directed by Chung Ji Young, which premiered earlier this month on March 15th.
