Netflix is moving forward with the release of its highly anticipated original series The WONDERfools, despite the ongoing tax evasion controversy surrounding Cha Eun Woo.
Industry reports on February 11th confirmed that the release date is set for May 15th, with promotional materials and a press conference planned for May 12th or 13th.
The WONDERfools is a comic action-adventure set in 1999, following a group of quirky neighborhood misfits who unexpectedly gain superpowers.
The show has generated a lot of buzz, thanks to its creative team, which includes director Yoo In Sik, known for Extraordinary Attorney Woo, and actress Park Eun Bin. The cast also features Cha Eun Woo, Choi Dae Hoon, Kim Hae Sook and Son Hyun Joo.
The release comes at a sensitive time, as Cha Eun Woo is facing tax evasion allegations. Last month, the National Tax Service informed him of a back tax assessment exceeding 20 billion won ($13.6 million), accusing him of reducing his tax burden by funneling income through a company set up by his mother.
Despite this, Netflix has decided to stick with the May release, possibly because Cha is scheduled to enlist in the military soon.
Cha has since issued an apology, saying, “I will reflect on myself more strictly in the future and live with a greater sense of responsibility, repaying the love I have received.”
