Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s president, revealed that she personally reached out to South Korean President Lee Jae Myung with an unusual diplomatic request: more BTS concerts in Mexico.
Speaking at a regular press briefing on Monday, Sheinbaum said that overwhelming demand for BTS’s upcoming Mexico City shows left huge numbers of young fans empty-handed. “More than 150,000 tickets were sold, but over one million people were trying to get seats,” she explained.
Sheinbaum said she has already been in discussions with the local promoters handling BTS’s Mexico leg. With only three concerts currently scheduled in Mexico City, she confirmed that she formally asked President Lee to help encourage the group to extend their stay. “I made a respectful diplomatic request for BTS to visit more often,” she said.
She added that she hopes for a positive response from Korea, or at the very least, approval for large-scale screen viewings. “We need to find ways for more young people to experience this group, which is incredibly popular here in Mexico,” Sheinbaum said.
BTS is set to perform in Mexico City on May 7th and May 9th–10th as part of their world tour. The concerts will take place at GNP Seguros Stadium, a venue with a capacity of up to 60,000 people that has previously hosted major acts like BLACKPINK, TWICE, and Taylor Swift.
Earlier this month on the 19th, Sheinbaum described BTS’s Mexico concerts as “historic” and urged authorities to closely monitor ticket sales to ensure fairness and transparency.
Ticket sales for the Mexico City shows opened at 9 AM on January 24th, and all seats for the three concerts sold out in just 37 minutes, igniting what fans quickly dubbed a full-scale ticket war.
