Arden Cho is facing criticism online after publicly supporting Cha Eun Woo amid the singer-actor’s ongoing tax controversy.
Cho, a Korean American actress who voiced Rumi in Netflix’s hit animated movie KPop Demon Hunters, left a supportive comment on Cha Eun Woo’s Instagram following his public apology over alleged tax underreporting.
On January 26th, Cha Eun Woo posted a statement addressing claims that he had been hit with a tax reassessment totaling roughly 20 billion won ($14 million). In the post, he apologized to fans and reflected on his responsibility as a taxpayer.
“I sincerely bow my head in apology for causing concern and disappointment through the recent issues surrounding me,” he wrote. “This incident has made me deeply reflect on whether I have taken my duty to pay taxes as a citizen of Korea seriously enough.”
Cha also addressed speculation that his military enlistment plans were an attempt to evade scrutiny. “I will fully cooperate with all remaining tax procedures,” he said, adding that he would “humbly accept the final decision made by the relevant authorities and take responsibility accordingly.” He concluded by pledging to live with greater accountability moving forward.
In the comments, Cho left a message of encouragement, writing, “Always supporting you dongseng, Hwaiting!” Her show of support quickly caught attention, but not all of it was positive.
Online reactions were swift, with some netizens criticizing the timing of the comment. Responses included remarks such as “Read the room, will you?” “Staying quiet would have helped,” and “If you want to support him, pay the taxes for him.”
Cho and Cha are known to have built a friendly rapport through various projects. In July of last year, when Cha was preparing for his military enlistment, Cho shared a heartfelt message on social media, writing that she would always support him and hoped to see him again in Hollywood after his service.
