Kim Junsu revealed a shocking “rags to riches” story that is even more heartbreaking than his fans realized.

Appearing as a special MC on SBS’s My Little Old Boy on January 18, the singer reflected on his journey to success.

He confirmed that his income has skyrocketed since moving into musical theater. When asked if it had really increased a hundredfold, he shyly replied, “Yes, that’s correct,” noting that his schedule is already fully booked for the next two years.

The Reality Behind the Luxury

The show also featured Kim’s current home, a luxurious penthouse he bought for 4.8 billion won ($3.5 million). Kim explained that his deep attachment to having a nice home comes from a difficult childhood.

“My childhood was much tougher than people might imagine,” he said. He compared his early living situation to the semi-basement homes shown in famous movie Parasite, but added that his reality was even harsher. “Our family lived in a semi-basement too, but it wasn’t a proper home like in the movie. It was just a single room with no toilet.”

He revealed a shocking detail about daily life back then: “Since there was no bathroom, we had to use the kitchen sink with a newspaper spread inside. The kitchen wasn’t even inside the room—you had to go outside. Looking back, it felt more like a storage space than a home.”

A Son’s Promise

Motivated by a desire to escape poverty, Kim made it his mission to provide a stable home for his family. “Even after my debut, I lived in dorms for a long time,” he said. “I wanted to give my parents a home before thinking about myself.” True to his word, the first major purchase he made after finding success was a house for his parents.
