BoA and SM Entertainment are parting ways after 25 years, and the contrast in how each side marked the moment is drawing attention.

On January 12th, SM announced that after extensive discussions, they’ve agreed to end BoA’s exclusive contract on December 31st, 2025. The company praised her as an “icon of overseas expansion,” “Asia’s star,” and a role model for K-pop artists, calling her “SM’s pride and symbol” and pledging continued support for her next chapter.

SM underscored that message with a six-minute tribute video on BoA’s official YouTube channel titled “You still our No.1 BoA,” spotlighting her journey from early interviews to peak-era performances, set to “Someday.” The takeaway: the contract may end, but her legacy at SM stands.

BoA’s own statement landed differently. Posting on Instagram the same day, she wrote, “We gave each other our all, so I’m leaving without regret. Thank you for the time we shared, and I’ll continue to support SM.”

The accompanying image sharpened the contrast. BoA sits atop a large installation spelling her name, wrapped in tape repeatedly reading “THANK YOU” and “RETURN.” The pairing suggested a polite farewell—and a clear, final handoff.

Observers noted the split in tone: SM closed the chapter with celebration and tribute; BoA closed it with resolve.
