Lee Ha Nee steps into uncharted territory with her daring role in Ha Jung Woo’s The People Upstairs.
The People Upstairs follows the unexpected events that unfold when the upstairs couple (Ha Jung Woo and Lee Ha Nee) and the downstairs couple (Gong Hyo Jin and Kim Dong Wook) share a dinner, triggered by the intimate noises coming from the upstairs apartment each night.
Lee Ha Nee plays Soo Kyung, the lively wife of the upstairs couple, whose nightly habits keep everyone on edge. She shares compelling on-screen chemistry with her husband, Ha Jung Woo.
“I was taken aback when I first read the script,” Lee Ha Nee admitted in the December 1st interview with Xports News. “Some lines were filled with words I had never used before. I worried about how to deliver them effectively since I didn’t fully understand them myself.”
Emphasizing that the film “goes beyond R-rated content and is definitely not for viewers under 35,” Lee Ha Nee explained what makes her character so compelling: “Soo Kyung is a character who feels real, yet doesn’t exist in real life. Audiences will likely relate most to the couple downstairs, but for them, the upstairs characters act like shock therapy with Soo Kyung casually tossing out these moments.”
Her character’s boldness was a key reason Lee Ha Nee wanted to join the project. “Some roles I choose because they feel relatable, but Soo Kyung felt completely insane,” she said. “She says the strangest things as if it’s normal. It was a real challenge for me.”
She continued, “But I wanted to see how far I could go. Soo Kyung could be someone in need of counseling, yet in everyday life, she’s fascinating, with a dual nature and an extraordinary private life.”
The People Upstairs is set to premiere on December 3rd.
