Legendary South Korean director Park Chan Wook has won the Best Director award at the 58th Sitges Film Festival for No Other Choice. The win, announced on October 19th, is the latest in a string of major accolades for the critically acclaimed movie.
No Other Choice has been a sensation on the international festival circuit. It was the first Korean film in 13 years to be invited to the main competition at the Venice International Film Festival, and it went on to win the prestigious People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The film currently holds a perfect 100% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes with over 68 reviews.
The win marks a successful return to Sitges for the director, who has a long history with the world’s largest genre film festival. His previous wins at the festival include Best Film for Oldboy (2004) and the Audience Award for The Handmaiden (2017).
Starring Lee Byung Hun and Son Ye Jin, No Other Choice is a unique survival drama that blends intense tension with Park’s signature ironic humor. It tells the story of a recently fired office worker who begins a personal war to get his life back and protect his family.
The film, which has also received invitations to the New York and London film festivals, is currently playing to wide acclaim in Korean theaters.
