Maple, the brave survivor who publicly exposed JMS cult leader Jung Myung Seok in the hit Netflix documentary In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal, has published a book detailing her harrowing experience and her mission to dismantle the controversial religious group.

She first came to international attention in the documentary, where she revealed her face and real name while testifying to the sexual violence she endured, sending shockwaves around the world.

Maple reflected on her decision to speak out in a recent social media post announcing the book. “Three years ago, at 28, I reported JMS to the police. I revealed my face, my real name, and the details of my assault. That was how such a massive organization with a 40-year history could be brought down,” she wrote. “Some may wonder why I felt the need to release a book… But I know many questions still remain.”

Maple explained that her book goes deeper than the documentaries, recounting in detail how she was recruited as a teenager, subjected to years of indoctrination, and ultimately found the strength to break free and press charges.

“For me personally, writing was a way to process the pain and heal. For readers, I hope it serves as a warning,” she said. “I want people to recognize the signs and protect themselves from harm.”

She also shared a powerful message of hope, adding, “Pain must be turned into something meaningful, otherwise it remains just pain. If transformed, it can become comfort, love, and hope not only for survivors but also for those around them.”

Professor Kim Do Hyeong of Dankook University, who has been supporting former JMS members, including Maple, shared news of her book release in the ex-member community today. He explained, “Maple was hesitant and initially against publishing the book, but thanks to my persistence and the encouragement of Producer Jo Seong Hyeon, who directed In the Name of God, the manuscript was completed and sent to print.” He added, “Pre-orders began today.”

Professor Kim went on to reveal, “Maple said, ‘I won’t accept royalties. Please use everything for other victims.’ But Producer Jo and I are currently scolding her, telling her she shouldn’t do that.” He praised her selflessness, saying, “Maple has a truly beautiful heart.”

Jung Myung Seok, the founder of JMS, was arrested and indicted on charges of sexually assaulting or molesting female followers—including women from Hong Kong, Australia, and South Korea—23 times between February 2018 and September 2021 at training centers in Geumsan County, South Chungcheong Province, and other locations.

In a separate heartwarming news, producer Cho Sung Hyun, who directed the Netflix documentary, recently shared that Maple is starting a new chapter in her own life.  “Maple is expecting a baby in December and will soon become a mother,” he said at a press event. “To see survivors reclaim happiness in everyday life, and even bring new life into the world… is deeply moving.”
