Former NCT member Taeil has filed an appeal after being convicted of aggravated quasi-rape, a charge under South Korean law that refers to sexual acts with a person unable to resist due to being unconscious or intoxicated.
On Wednesday, Taeil and two co-defendants filed the appeal with the Seoul Central District Court, seeking to overturn the conviction from their initial trial. The convictions follow a June 2023 incident in which all three men admitted to sexually assaulting an unconscious and intoxicated foreign woman.
Prosecutors requested a seven-year prison sentence for Taeil, but the court sentenced him to three years and six months in prison on July 10th. In addition to the prison term, Taeil was ordered to complete a 40-hour sexual violence treatment program, face public disclosure of his personal information and adhere to a five-year employment restriction in institutions related to children and youth.
Taeil, who had remained free during the trial, was taken into custody immediately following the verdict. He is now being held in a detention center as his case proceeds to the appeals court.
