Shocking new details have emerged regarding the sexual assault charges against former NCT member Taeil, revealing that the allegations are far more serious than initially reported.
On October 7th, Chosun Ilbo reported that the Seoul Bangbae Police Station is investigating Taeil for aggravated rape. Aggravated rape involves the use of a weapon or multiple perpetrators in sexually assaulting an individual who is rendered incapable of resistance—such as being intoxicated. According to the report, Taeil and two acquaintances allegedly assaulted a woman under these circumstances, leading to a formal complaint in June. Taeil was summoned for police questioning in August.
Under Korean law, aggravated rape is a serious charge. If convicted, the Special Act on Punishment of Sexual Crimes stipulates a minimum prison sentence of seven years, with the possibility of a life sentence.
SM Entertainment, Taeil’s former agency, has been tight-lipped about the situation, stating, “As this is an ongoing investigation, it is difficult to provide further comment at this time.”
Back in August, it was first revealed that Taeil had been accused of sexual misconduct. SM Entertainment then released a statement, saying, “We recently confirmed that Taeil has been accused in a criminal case related to sexual assault. After assessing the severity of the situation, we decided that Taeil could no longer continue his activities with the group, and following discussions, he has decided to leave the team.”
The news of Tae Il’s sudden departure, paired with the serious allegations, left fans in shock. Speculation grew regarding the severity of the charges, especially as Taeil quickly exited NCT while the investigation was still ongoing.
