SHINee’s Taemin has apologized after facing backlash for a comment made during a livestream on July 5th.

While chatting with fans, Taemin referenced Japan’s so-called “July Great Earthquake Theory,” saying, “It might be cool if the stage shook while I was singing,” and described imagining it like a 3D effect with fireworks and flames. When fellow member Minho expressed surprise, Taemin added, “I just imagined it. I thought saying it out loud might prevent it.”

The comment drew criticism for appearing to downplay fears around natural disasters. The earthquake theory stems from manga artist Tatsuki Ryo, who previously predicted Japan’s 2011 earthquake.

On July 6th, Taemin posted an apology, saying, “I meant to comfort worried fans but didn’t think carefully. I deeply regret my words and will be more cautious.”
